Good photographs are rarely caught. Usually someone chose a position first, and then waited.

The beginner’s sequence for anything moving is: notice something interesting → raise the camera → focus → compose → release. By the time those five steps are done, it is over.

The experienced sequence runs the other way: find a frame that already works → stand, focus, set exposure → wait.

So the sentence for the field is not “be quicker” but:

What is this frame missing right now?

Once you can answer that, all that remains is waiting for it to arrive.

Why reacting is always too late

This is not about practice. The arithmetic does not work. Broken down:

A conservative total is one and a half to three seconds. A person clearing a puddle is airborne for around 0.3 seconds. Your whole reaction chain is five to ten times longer than the moment.

There is a further point that gets overlooked: an electronic viewfinder shows you the past. The panel’s own display lag is very low — Fujifilm quotes 0.005 s — but sensor readout, processing and refresh accumulate along the chain, landing somewhere between a few and a few tens of milliseconds. The instant you “see” the take-off in the EVF, they are already in the air. This is not a defect — an optical finder has no such delay but blacks out as the mirror rises. The cost simply moves.

The conclusion is hard: you cannot react to an event, only predict one. “Frame first, then wait” is not a stylistic preference. It is the only approach that is physically available.

In practice:

  1. Find a place where the composition already works — an interesting light, a clean wall, a corner with leading lines. The test is: pressing the shutter now would not be embarrassing, it would only lack a protagonist.
  2. Pre-focus and set exposure.
  3. Hold the camera up, or keep it low but ready.
  4. Press when somebody walks into the position.

It sounds dull, and it is the most efficient method street photography has. You are not chasing an event; you are setting a trap.

There is a bonus: because the frame was decided in advance, you make fewer and better photographs. Someone chasing events can release three hundred times in a day and like none of them; someone with a trap set may release twenty times, but the background, light and composition of all twenty were their own choice.

Removing the focus delay

Step two deserves expanding, because it is the easiest link to delete outright.

The method is zone focusing: set the lens manually to a distance, stop down to f/8 or f/11, and everything from some near distance to infinity falls within depth of field. No focusing at all after that.

On an APS-C body with a 23 mm lens (35 mm equivalent):

(The focus distances in the last two rows are the hyperfocal distance for that aperture — focus there and the far limit genuinely reaches infinity. All of it shifts with your chosen circle of confusion; treat them as orders of magnitude, not specifications.)

The cost is higher ISO or a slower shutter. It is a good trade: outdoors in daylight, f/8 at ISO 400 usually still leaves 1/500, and what you buy is a camera that photographs the instant you press — fifty to three hundred milliseconds gone from the chain, and the least predictable link at that.

Fujifilm bodies suit this particularly well, because most lenses carry a physical aperture ring and several have a distance scale, so nothing needs confirming in a menu once it is set.

Anticipation is learnable, and it is mostly rhythm

“Predict the event” sounds like a talent. Mostly it is knowing that almost everything worth photographing repeats.

A skateboarder will attempt the same trick fifteen times before landing it. A busker plays songs with a structure, and the same lift arrives in each chorus. Waves arrive in sets. A market trader repeats one gesture every ninety seconds. Children on a swing reach the same top of the arc, over and over.

Which converts an impossible task into a routine one: the first repetition is for observing, not photographing. Watch one cycle without the camera at your eye, find where the peak occurs and what precedes it by half a second, and then photograph the second cycle knowing exactly what is coming.

The corollary is worth stating, because it explains a lot of frustration: genuinely singular events are usually not photographable, and that is not your failure. Accidents, the one gesture at the one moment — those are luck. Everything most photographers actually shoot repeats, and can be prepared for.

Moments differ in kind, and enormously in duration

“The decisive moment” is easily read as “the instant somebody jumps”. There are several kinds, and the time they allow differs by orders of magnitude — which decides your whole strategy.

A stricter alignment. Look at where the two figures are standing — exactly inside the lit opening where the converging escalator lines meet, the brightest patch in the frame. The escalator never stops, so the position holds for two or three seconds per trip; two seconds later they are out of frame, two seconds earlier they were still in the black. All the photographer can do is settle the angle and wait for the next group.

The practical consequence: misreading which kind you are waiting for means using the wrong strategy. Burst mode aimed at light produces a pile of identical frames; single frames aimed at an action peak keep missing by half a second.

Shutter speed decides how long a moment is

Everything above is about pressing at the right time. The other half is how much time you collect once you have pressed.

Shutter speed is usually taught as one of three exposure variables. That is its technical face. Its narrative face is that the shutter time is how much of reality this photograph covers. A thousandth is a slice; a second is a process; thirty seconds is a sum.

Some thresholds worth memorising — roughly what it takes to freeze each thing:

But freezing is not automatically the goal. Motion blur is the only way a still frame can say that something was moving:

  • Blurred subject, sharp background (camera still, slow shutter) → the subject is what moves. Good for crowded streets and fairground rides.
  • Sharp subject, blurred background (camera turning with the subject — panning) → the thing you followed is what moves. 1/30 to 1/60 is a usual starting point and takes practice.
  • Everything blurred → usually a failure, unless the abstraction is the point.
A counter-example, and the most useful frame in this chapter. Under a long exposure the water is no longer any moment at all — it is several seconds of water laid on top of itself, an appearance nobody has ever witnessed. There is no decisive instant to wait for here, because the instant has been abolished. Choosing whether to freeze is choosing whether the photograph is about a moment or about a duration.

The test is one sentence: ask whether the movement itself matters. If it does, freeze it. If it does not, let it smear into the background. The worst outcome is the middle — a walking figure at 1/60 is neither sharp nor blurred, and reads only as camera shake.

How much continuous shooting helps

Burst mode genuinely raises the hit rate, and the specifications repay reading carefully: the X-T5 does 15 fps mechanical, while its 20 fps electronic requires a 1.29× crop (40 MP down to about 24 MP) and is 13 fps uncropped; the X-E4 does 8 fps mechanical and up to 20 fps electronic uncropped, or 30 fps with a 1.25× crop. It suits:

  • Fast-changing expressions — children, a laugh halfway out
  • Sport and animals
  • Group frames where nobody must be blinking

It carries three costs, all larger than people expect:

  1. You accumulate hundreds of near-identical frames and then avoid the folder. Not a small thing — chapter sixteen argues that editing decides what a body of work becomes, and a folder you will not open is not a body of work.
  2. The buffer fills and the camera stops. Writing a burst to the card takes time, and once the buffer is full there is a dead window in which nothing can be photographed — frequently landing exactly on the real climax.
  3. The electronic shutter skews fast motion. The sensor is read line by line over several to tens of milliseconds, so anything crossing quickly — a swung bat, a spinning wheel — records leaning, because the top and bottom of the frame are not the same instant. Use the mechanical shutter for fast action.

And the fundamental one: burst mode does not improve judgement. If the composition was wrong, thirty frames are thirty wrong compositions.

Suggested use: single frames normally, short bursts of three to five at the moment that matters.

Six common symptoms and their causes

  1. Always half a second late; the action is over → you are reacting, and the chain is longer than the event → frame first and wait; for action, pre-focus as well.
  2. You caught the action but the frame is a mess → you chased the event, so the event chose the picture → go back to finding a position that already composes. Better to let this one go.
  3. Thirty frames and none of them right → burst solves timing, not judgement, and the problem is judgement → stop and find what all thirty share, usually that you are standing in the wrong place.
  4. Someone entered the frame but not where you wanted → you never decided where they should be → nominate a point inside the frame and wait for them to step on it; if they do not, do not press.
  5. Fast-moving things come out leaning or distorted → line-by-line readout of the electronic shutter → switch to mechanical.
  6. You waited a long time and the light never came → moments of light have windows set by cloud and season, not by your patience → note which season and hour this position works in and return. That note is worth far more than another hour of standing.

“The decisive moment” is a mistranslation

The phrase comes from Henri Cartier-Bresson, but his book is not called that.

The 1952 collection is Images à la sauvette in French — roughly “images on the sly”, pictures grabbed in passing. The tone is light, opportunistic, of the street. The American edition renamed it The Decisive Moment, a phrase taken from the seventeenth-century Cardinal de Retz and printed as the book’s epigraph.

The rename shifted the whole centre of gravity. The French title is about chance and passing through; the English one is about decisiveness and one uniquely correct instant, which sounds like a flash of genius. That reading has caused decades of confusion — including the conclusion that what one needs is faster reflexes.

Cartier-Bresson’s own method was what this chapter describes: a 50 mm lens, aperture and distance preset, a background, and waiting there.

The circumstances of his best-known frame are more interesting still, and closer to the French title. Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare in 1932, a man strides across floodwater with his toe about to touch the surface — and the temporary fence was blocking his view. He did not choose that position; he could only push the lens into a gap between the boards. The negative caught the fence at the left edge and was cropped afterwards, one of only two crops in his career.

So the photograph is evidence of two things at once: the frame was decided (he knew what he wanted) and the position was improvised (a hole was all he had). “Decisive” describes the instant in the picture — never the photographer’s reflexes, and not a perfect vantage point either.

Some moments cannot be seen at all

Everything above assumes you can see the moment and merely cannot press in time. There is another class you cannot see on location at all.

In June 1878 Muybridge lined a track at Palo Alto, California with twelve cameras triggered by tripwires and recorded a horse in motion, settling whether all four hooves ever leave the ground at once. The question existed at all because no human eye is fast enough to decide it. (The widely repeated $25,000 wager has no documentary support; treat it as folklore.)

Strictly it was not the first photograph of something the eye cannot see — Talbot’s 1851 spark exposure had already frozen a page legible while spinning — but it was the first time the fact became a public event. Photography has had two kinds of moment ever since: the ones you can wait for, and the ones only a machine perceives. The first needs position and patience; the second needs shutter speed and light. They are different jobs with different preparation.

The dividing line is easy to apply: ask whether your eye can tell the before from the after. If it can — someone walking past, an expression arriving — it is a waiting problem. If it cannot — a wingbeat, spray, a bursting balloon — it is an equipment and settings problem, and standing there all day will not improve it.

The most important thing

Be there.

Technique can be practised and composition can be learned, but nothing substitutes for being in the place with a camera in your hand. The most effective piece of photographic advice remains: take the camera out.

A light body like the X-E4 has a real advantage here — not because it makes better files, but because you will be willing to carry it. The largest effect equipment has on your photographs happens at the moment you decide whether to bring it, not at the moment you press the shutter.
