The previous chapter was about hardness, which governs what the edge of a shadow looks like. This one is about direction, which governs where the shadow falls — and where the shadow falls decides what your viewer can see.

The question to ask on location is: do I want colour, form, or outline from this picture? You cannot have all three at full strength, and the way you choose between them is by walking to a different spot.

There is a demonstration you can run in a minute. Switch on a phone torch and light a piece of fruit from the front, then from the side, then from behind. The same fruit becomes three different objects. Its shape did not change. Its colour did not change. What changed is how much of its shadow you can see.

What direction actually means

Most tutorials describe direction as where the light is standing. That is not what you see in the viewfinder. What decides the picture is: how much of the subject’s shadow side is turned towards the camera.

Anything lit by a single source has a lit side and a dark side. The source decides which way the dark side faces; you decide whether it faces you.

  • Front light (source behind you): the dark side hides completely behind the subject, so you see nothing but lit surface — no tonal variation, no volume.
  • Side light (source to your left or right): lit and dark divide roughly in half with a transition between them, and your brain reads that gradient as form.
  • Back light (source behind the subject): every surface facing you is the dark side, with only a rim of brightness along the edge — no detail, just shape.

One consequence is immediately useful: you do not have to wait for the light to change, you only have to move. The sun travels 15 degrees an hour; you can travel 90 degrees around a subject in five steps. When a picture is not working, most people reach for a setting first — but no setting relocates a shadow.

There is a second axis that gets forgotten. Direction is not only left and right; it is also height. Side light with the sun at 10 degrees and side light with it at 60 degrees give completely different pictures — the first stretches shadows into long lines across the ground, the second squashes them underneath things. Left and right decide how light and dark divide. Height decides how long the shadows run.

The sun is behind you and the light lands squarely on the subject. This is the most common posture in the history of cameras — every manual taught it — and it genuinely is the hardest one to get wrong: exposure is easy, colour is saturated, and there are no awkward shadows.

The price is that all the shadows have gone to hide behind the subject, taking the sense of volume with them. Mountains photographed in front light look like stickers. Faces look flat. The colour is lovely, and colour is all there is.

Front light earns its place in three situations:

  1. Colour is the subject — painted houses, flowers, signage, market shelves.
  2. The shape is already strong enough on its own — a distinctive tree, a bold pattern, anything that reads without help from tone.
  3. Depth is coming from somewhere else — converging lines, overlap, size falling off with distance. The photograph above survives on exactly that.

One practical side effect: front light throws shadows straight back behind the subject, which means your own shadow tends to walk into the frame. The lower the sun, the worse it gets, which is why so many late-afternoon front-lit portraits come with a free photographer stencilled on the grass.

Light arrives from the side, the subject splits into a lit half and a dark half, and a transition runs between them. That gradient is the cue your visual system uses to infer shape — infants already use it, and they assume light comes from above.

Side light is also texture light, but there is a misreading to clear away first: texture does not need hard light so much as a grazing angle.

Take a brushstroke one millimetre proud of a wall. Lit from the front it throws essentially nothing and you never see it. Lit at five degrees to the surface, it throws a shadow roughly eleven millimetres long — an eleven-fold magnification of a detail your eye would otherwise miss. The ridge did not grow. Its shadow did. Which is why:

  • Old plaster, wood grain, leather, dunes and the lines on a face all want light that runs along the surface.
  • The same wall photographed at eight in the morning and at noon looks like two different materials.
  • A conservator raking a lamp across a canvas in a museum is doing precisely this.

For faces, side light needs restraint. Take it all the way to 90 degrees and the face splits into a bright half and a black half with the nose shadow running across the cheek. The usual compromise puts the light around 45 degrees round and slightly above eye level, so the nose shadow drops down and sideways instead of cutting the face in two. That position has a studio name — Rembrandt lighting — after the small triangle of light it leaves on the shadowed cheek.

There is a further refinement worth knowing, because it decides whether a face reads as narrow or broad. If the far side of the face — the side turned away from the camera — is the lit one, that is short lighting, and it slims the face by putting more of the near cheek in shadow. If the near side is lit, that is broad lighting, and it widens. Same subject, same lamp, same angle of light to the face; the only thing that changed is which side the camera stands on. Portrait photographers use short lighting by default for exactly this reason.

Back light is the most dramatic light there is, and the one most often mistaken for a mistake. All it does is force an explicit choice:

Option A — keep the sky, let the subject go to silhouette. Meter for the highlights, or dial in −1 to −2 stops. The requirement is that the outline be clean and readable.

Option B — keep the subject, let the sky blow out. Meter for the subject, or dial in +1 to +2. The sky goes to paper white, which frequently looks better than it sounds — it reads as air.

Silhouettes have one hard rule: outlines must not overlap. Two heads that touch, an arm resting against a body, a hat merging into a branch, and the shape stops being legible. The work in a silhouette is not the exposure; it is waiting or moving until there is a gap between every shape.

There is also a third path: light the subject’s front slightly with a reflector, a flash, or nothing more than a pale wall to stand near, and keep both ends of the range. This is the standard portrait recipe — the sun behind gives the hair a bright rim, the bounce in front keeps detail in the face.

Back light also does something people forget to expect: it makes the air itself visible. Moisture, dust and pollen light up when the source is behind them, so you get beams, glowing edges on hair, leaves that transmit rather than reflect. In front light none of this exists — not photographed badly, simply absent.

Between side and back: the position most people actually use

There is a position between the two: the light behind the subject but off to one side, roughly at ten o’clock or two o’clock from the camera and a little above. It rarely appears in the beginner’s three-way split, and it is the direction working portrait and travel photographers reach for most.

It hands you three things at once:

  • A rim of light that separates subject from background — obvious on hair, shoulders, and animal fur.
  • A face still turned mostly towards its own shadow, so the skin stays soft with no hard diagonal across it.
  • A background often lit by that same sun, so a darker subject sits against a brighter surround and the layers separate themselves.

The cost is flare, because the source sits just outside the frame pointing into your lens. The remedies are the ones in the next section, plus one trick: position yourself so the subject’s own head eclipses the sun.

The test for whether you are standing in the right place is simple: look for a bright line along the subject’s edge. If it is there, you have found the position. If not, you are still in plain side light.

Shooting into the source

Putting the sun in the frame produces flare and starbursts. There is no right or wrong here, only whether you are controlling it:

  • If you want the starburst → stop down to f/11–f/16 and let something partly cover the sun — a branch, the edge of a roof, a ridgeline. A half-hidden sun gives a cleaner, more controllable star than a naked one.
  • If you do not want flare → shade the front element with a hood or your hand. As long as the sun is outside the frame, holding a hand above the lens works, and it is the most frequently forgotten free technique in photography.
  • Clean the front element first. Fingerprints and cheap filters turn a manageable flare into a milky wash across the whole frame. Wiping the glass often does more for a back-lit photograph than changing lenses would.

It is worth knowing that this is partly a fashion. Early uncoated lenses flared so badly that photographers avoided shooting towards the light at all; modern multicoating suppresses it well enough that film-makers from the 1970s onwards began letting flare in deliberately, as a signal of realism. When you decide to keep or kill a flare, you are picking a side in an argument that is a century old.

Overhead and under-lighting: two directions with no photograph

Two directions have no example picture on this site, for different reasons, and both are worth knowing.

Overhead light is the sun straight above. It pins shadows directly beneath things and leaves a face with black eye sockets, a patch under the nose and a band under the chin. It is not useless — vertical surfaces on buildings are lit evenly under it, and shadow patterns on the ground are at their strongest — but it is nearly impossible to make a face work in. The next chapter returns to this, because overhead light is really a question about time.

Under-lighting comes from below. It deserves its own note precisely because nature almost never provides it: sun, moon and sky are all above, and the only exceptions are surfaces bouncing light back up — snow, sand, water — which fill shadows rather than lead.

So when a face has its shadows running upwards — bright chin, dark forehead, nose shadow thrown up between the eyes — a viewer registers it as wrong before working out why. The torch-under-the-chin cliché of horror films runs on that reflex. It can absolutely be used deliberately, around a campfire, at a stage’s footlights, over a candle on a table, as long as you know which button you are pressing.

  3. A back-lit portrait has a face like a lump of coal and a perfectly exposed sky → the meter averaged the frame and the bright background won → +1 to +2 exposure compensation, or move closer so the face fills more of the metered area, or add fill.
  4. The silhouette is unreadable → outlines overlapping, or a pose that does not describe itself → move until there are gaps between shapes; silhouettes want profiles, not front views.
  5. A back-lit frame is grey and low in contrast with washed-out colour → veiling flare, light bouncing around inside the lens → hood, hand, or a small change of angle to put the sun outside the frame, and clean the glass first.
  6. Texture disappears from a wall or a floor → the light is frontal and the relief throws no shadow → move to where the light grazes the surface, which usually means coming back early or late in the day.

Why nineteenth-century photographs look so flat

The direction choices of early photography were not aesthetic. They were set by film speed.

Wet-plate materials were extremely slow, exposures ran from seconds to tens of seconds, and the photographer needed every scrap of light available — which meant putting the subject in the brightest possible orientation, namely front light. That is why so many nineteenth-century outdoor photographs look flat. Not because side light was unknown, but because it could not be afforded.

The same constraint explains why portraiture of that period lived indoors. Outdoors was brighter, but any movement smeared the plate, while the north-facing studio skylight of the previous chapter offered light that was stable, predictable and enormous.

Only when emulsions got faster and lamps became portable did direction turn into a variable you choose. The studio vocabulary — Rembrandt, butterfly, split, short and broad — was named after that shift, and nearly every one of those names is borrowed from painting. Painters had been solving the same problem for three centuries; they simply decided where the shadow fell with a brush.

Three steps on location

These are the steps to actually run, and the order matters.

  1. Decide what you want. Is this photograph about colour (a market stall, flowers, painted walls), form (a face, terrain, texture), or outline (a tree, a gesture, air behind a subject)? Answer that and the direction has a standard to be judged against.
  2. Find the light. Check where the sun sits and how high it is; indoors, find the largest bright surface — window, lamp, lit wall. If you cannot see the source, look at which way the shadows point and work backwards.
  3. Move — yourself first, the subject second. Want form: go round to the side of the light. Want outline: go round so the light is behind the subject. When nothing can move, the remaining tool is waiting: the sun covers 15 degrees an hour, so half an hour buys you a noticeably different angle.

When none of that is possible — no time, an impatient subject, light that is simply bad — there is a fallback: photograph a smaller part of it. The whole scene may be unsalvageable in the wrong direction, but a hand, a sign, the shadow of a sign often still works. Narrow the frame and the light has less of you to push around.

A habit worth building

When you arrive somewhere, do not raise the camera. Walk half a circle around the subject and see what it looks like in front, side and back light. It costs under thirty seconds and it is one of the largest differences between beginner photographs and the rest.

When circling is impossible — the subject is a building, the road is in the way, there is no time — fall back on a single question: is the sun behind me, beside me, or in front of me? Knowing only that, you already know whether this photograph will lean towards colour, form, or outline.
